FOREST DE SOIGNES -

MASSIVE DEFORESTATION OF NEARLY 5000 m2

FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF 86 PARKING SPACES

in UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE buffer zone and NATURA 2000 SITE

DECISION WAS TAKEN WITHOUT COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

Background of construction works:

  • July 2020 massive felling in the "buffer zone" of this World Heritage at the edge of the Forêt de Soignes, Espinette Centrale - Drève St Michel

The planned car parking will be parallel to the Chaussée de Waterloo and will accommodate 86 spaces (nearly three times more than the current parking).

  • No prior communication with the citizens of Rhode, and the local residents of Espinette Centrale in particular

  • Expensive project of around 1.1 million euros. Such an amount should have been spent on work preservation of the Sonian Forest and not deforestation.

The Forêt de Soignes has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on July 8, 2017

“The forest of Soignes covers about 4400 hectares. This natural and forest area has great ecological and scientific value and enjoys international recognition notably as a site classified Natura 2000 and by UNESCO (primary and ancient beech forests of the Carpathians and other parts of Europe). About 74% of the trees that make up the Soignes forest are acidophilic beech trees. But other types of habitats such as grasslands and eutrophic wastelands (herbaceous vegetation) are also well represented.”
